Homer H. Hickam Jr. was from a small town in West Virginia named Coalwood. He was the son of a miner. He won the National Science Fair in 1960. Fought in Vietnam during the Vietnam War. He went to work for N.A.S.A in 1981.
This book is about a young man looking for aproval from his father when he decides to build rockets. Homer feels that all his dad cares about is the coal mine. Homer wants to build rockets so he can work for his childhood hero, Dr. Von Braun. He and the other boys of the BCMA enter their rockets in the Science Fair and they make it all the way to the National Science Fair.
